What is felt bitumen roofing?
Felt bitumen, also known as bituminous felt or felt flat roofing, is a waterproof sheeting used to cover roofs independently, or as a base for slate and tile roofing. The bitumen that it’s named for is a crude oil product mixed with crushed limestone or sand, lending it both a flexible and a gritty aesthetic that can be improved with an extra coating of fine gravel or sand.
What are the benefits of felt flat roofing?
- Ease of Installation
In terms of securing the roof’s interior from the rain, few materials work better than felt bitumen, which creates a complete, sealed layer that water simply can’t penetrate.
Highly durable, resistant to heat, cold, sun, and rain, and resilient against debris, felt flat roofing is reliable. Little maintenance or repairs is required, and it’s guaranteed to last a minimum of 10 years, but often lasts longer than 30, in reality.
- Return on investment
Felt bitumen is an investment, but it’s one that pays off thanks to the little maintenance needed compared to other materials, which lowers the overall cost in the long-term
